E.K. was born in 1958. He started studying the piano since seven years of age, and later on the classical double bass. When he was 14, he started playing mandolin in his older brother‘s bluegrass band.
He crafted his first F5 mandolin from an old piano during his compulsory military service in 1979, on his barrack’s window sill. In the then Czechoslovakia it was the only way for a bluegrass musician to get to this otherwise unaccessible instrument. After another ten years of amateur work and study of violin makers literature he became a professional instrument maker. After the political regime change in 1989 he made a few trips through the USA, where he finally had the chance to study many of the best bluegrass mandolins, including some Lloyd Loar F5s from 1922-23s.
As a mandolin player he won two prestigious american competitions and in 1993 gained the title of „Telluride Mandolin Contest Champion“ and in 1996 the title of „Rockygrass Mando Champion“.
